Kirkenes is located in Northern Norway. The town is the centre of Sør-Varanger municipality, and in 1998 it was also given town status. Taking into account the surrounding settlements, there is a population of approx. 6000 in the Kirkenes area.

Sør-Varanger municipality has a population of approximately 9600 people spread out over 3,900 km².
The municipality lies on both the Russian and the Finnish borders. This gives the municipality a very central location seen from a business point of view. We are right at the centre of the Barents-region, with an ice-free harbour and access to the Barents Sea all year round. Because of our location, much of the industry features various types of production directed towards the enormous market of north-western Russia.
